We’ve long suspected that a vast majority of California drivers is opposed to
the crash tax – the practice of a growing number of local governments imposing
a fee or tax on auto accident victims.
Now we are certain of the opposition. Channel 10
TV in San Diego recently posted the
results of its exclusive poll on this issue when two local governments in the
area proposed varying forms of the crash tax. The poll results were
dramatically lopsided.
Those polled were overwhelmingly opposed. A
whopping 73% of the respondents said they were against the levy while only 17%
supported it. Just 10% said they were not sure.
The results are no surprise because the tax is
so obviously unwise and unfair – especially at a time when Californians are
suffering through one of the worst recessions in the state’s history.
Local governments are hurting, too. But that
doesn’t mean they should
double tax their constituents or unsuspecting motorists traveling through their
communities.
